In all the midnight garden confusion, God’s plan began to unfold. Jesus was arrested. The disciples were left to fend for themselves, and in usual fashion, Peter winds up in another overzealous fit of his own pride. Peter would be found denying Jesus while warming his hands by enemy’s fire. While Jesus is being denied by His own, He is also being persecuted by the crowds of those who have always rejected.
The cross, who was there? Where were the multitudes who once had bellies full of miraculous fish and chips? How many of them were the same who now yelled crucify Him? Where were the disciples, and what did Jesus say about His mother? Even to the last moment, Jesus was about His Father’s business.
Judas would receive his own judgment. He would throw the coins back at the feet of the ones who hired him as hitman. He would try to backtrack, negotiate, and make it right. Ultimately, Judas would use the money to buy a field, and would commit suicide there. Tragedy among tragedy. The enemy would win on so many levels. Lord Jesus, help us to not fall for the bait of satan and fall to the same fate.
And those fickle disciples! During that little moment between resurrection and ascension, the believers would witness the risen Lord, would have opportunity to ask questions, to grapple with the idea of eternity and glorified bodies. Believers would hear the promise of a place prepared and a Savior who wouldn’t forget us.
God is always just, and He is always extending mercy and grace to those who seek Him. What will our heart’s cry? What will be our declaration and when will be our day of decision?
